'E PROPOSE to epitomize some facts not generally known about Slate Stone. From its ready adaption, its strength,
its endurance, whether from wear or from weather, it stands foremost among stones of commerce.

Pure slate may be said to be indestructible. It is impervious to moisture, resists the corroding effects of
dampness and gases in all climates, becomes more indurated by time, and is changeless in color. Its tenacity of resistance to
vertical pressure is about one-third that of cast iron. It admits of little or no deflection when submitted to a strain parallel with
the plane of its laminae, and when placed in the latter position exceeds every other kind of stone, and nearly equals cast iron.
Slate possesses some remarkable and peculiar properties. It may be split into sheets as thin as card board; it is not a conductor
of heat; does not tarnish with oil or grease; resists the action of most of the acids and alkalies. It receives and rigidly retains
on its surface the chemical and metallic compounds used in enameling, by which process it is marbleized and otherwise orna-
mented, and its surface presents that of a polished mirror. No stone material heretofore discovered can be rendered useful in
such a variety of ways. For urinal purposes, slate stands foremost and is growing in public favor, as well with architects as with
sanitary engineers. For use in sinks and laundry tubs, the utility and superiority of slate is well known with plumbers and build-
ers. There is no shrinking, no decaying; it is easily kept clean, and will not absorb grease, oils, etc. For wash-bowl tops
(while it is not claimed that for these it has all of the beauty and elegance of finish of polished marble, and its consequent fit-
ness for every place where such tops are required and used), it is claimed that in a very large number of places — fully one-half —
it will be found superior. We refer to its use in kitchens and servants' rooms, offices, schools, hospitals, depots, restaurants,
factories, mills, machine shops and other places. Indeed, in any place where the utmost care cannot be given to cleanliness,
where there may be oils or acids, or other substances to stain or soil, slate is unquestionably superior to white or colored marble.
Another use, and a most artistic one, to which slate has very recently been put, is the wainscoting of halls, stairways and lava-
tories. The slate is marbleized to imitate the more costly marbles— Onyx, Devonshire, Numidian — and when carefully finished,
passes as marble, at a very much lower price.

On the Stairways of Apartment Houses and Public Buildings, slate is being largely specified for steps and landings, as it
is more durable and is more easily cleaned than marble.

It would seem, therefore, that there is an infinite variety of uses to which slate material can be put, and we believe that
as time proves its adaptability, these uses will be measurably increased.

FLOOR SLAB FOR CLOSETS.

43

LATE BASE is conceded to be the best
protection against fire that can be ob-
tained, it will stand a great amount of heat and
not crack like marble or other stone. All in-
vestigations prove that if fire can be kept out
of the partitions of a building in which a draft
of air is created as in a chimney, the building
can be saved. By placing the base on the joists,
as per sketch, then letting the floor come flush
with the slate, no fire can get between the
partitions.

Base is made in any width from 3 to 10
inches, and in lengths from 2 to 8 feet.

Nos. i, 2, 3 and 4, have one top, one bottom, two sides, and two ends.
For Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 8, on account of their heavy weights, the tops and bottoms
are made in two pieces, and are jointed in such a manner as to make them per-
fectly water-tight. They are put together without bolts, the pressure of the
ground holding them in place. They are shipped K. D., which lessens the cost
of freight.

Please order by number.

Slate Treads m Platforms

FOR FIRE=PROOF BUILDINGS

In constructing fire-proof buildings the flights of stairs
must be of stone or iron, or both. While the frame- work
is of iron, no stone that is known to architecture serves better
for the treads and platforms than slate. Its strength, its long
wearing qualities, its softness and noiselessness under the feet,
the ease with which it may be put in place, make it without a
rival. It may be found in use in most of the fine public
buildings erected within a few years in all the larger cities of
this country. Attention is especially directed to its adaption
for public and private school buildings, court houses, public
halls, hospitals, asylums, hotels, flats, stores and office build-
ings.
